With a brand new line up, the 2s repeated last year’s 6-0 thrashing of Gravesend. With no subs and a guesting keeper, only new skipper Kevin Antao, Steve Lipscombe, Daniel McHallum and Johnny Faint survived from last season’s side.

Will Bishop returned, whilst Ray George and Nick Williams brought a talented group of youngsters with them along from the 3s, Fergus Feltham, Charlie Nunn and Adam Cook.

And it was the 3s who stole the show. Fergus, Adam and Ray were rock solid at the back with Will, stiffling attacks and building play from defence. Meanwhile Nick, Daniel and Charlie were marauding forward from midfield with some lovely passing play between them and Kevin and Johnny.

There were some good chances and half-chances that came and went, including a series of short corners but New Beccs were only a goal to the good at the break, despite having spent the entire 35 minutes in the opposition half. The breakthrough came with a smart finish by Kevin across the goalkeeper from a short corner.

Although Gravesend had only made a couple attacks, they looked dangerous going forward, and despite New Beccs’ dominance of the play, the game still lay in the balance.

However, shortly after the start of the second period the greens doubled their lead. With little return to show from a hatful of penalty corners, Ray was drafted from the backline to coolly place the ball past the keeper. Galvanised, New Beccs continued to press and despite keeper, Adrian, having to make a few smart saves at the other end, they were on top for the rest of the game.

Steve received the ball near the by-line and played it across a crowded goalmouth to Charlie who finished calmly from close range. Charlie repeated the same trick a few minutes later when Steve again picked him out form just outside the D.

Johnny thought he’d scored a clever looping shot over the goalie but it was ruled out. He was back on the hunt shortly afterwards though and his shot squeezed its way between the keeper and a defender.

Steve finished the scoring with a lifted shot to the left of the goalkeeper from six metres out.

A great start to the season. There will tougher teams to play, so improving the final ball and finishing will be at the top of the agenda for next week.
